Clinical Friday

Friday is always a bit of a "catch-up" day...

The day started with the students doing their ReadyGen Unit 2 Module A Unit Test Skills Check.  It involves reading an article and answering questions about the article using key ideas and details and text evidence.

The kids then worked on testing on their independent reading books and checking out new books from the classroom library and signing up on the weekly reading sheet.  Some of the students are reading great books, others are not reading much at all.  Parents, remember we need 40-45 minutes of independent reading time each day!  Encourage it!

I am very pleased with the progress most students are making.  It is very obvious who is practicing and reading and who isn't when we read in class.  The kids can tell too!  We were very excited when we passed one of the fifth grade classes with the # of AR points we have earned from reading.  Now, the big push needs to be getting all test questions right (CLOSER READING AND UNDERSTANDING) so our test percentage will increase.  85% is considered passing and we are just above 50%.  Points are great, but reading for understanding (higher percent correct) is the ultimate goal.

Second period they had Science with Ms. Gallan.

Third period we talked about the behavior of the students in the hallway.  They still want to talk way too much.  I have told them repeatedly that they will let me know when they are ready for a trip because I want have to say a word about their behavior in the hallway.  I asked the students what I should do different since they don't seem to listen and the consensus was for me to call parents of students who talk in line.   I guess that is what I am going to have to do.

We then went on to do ReadyGen 2A.14 and the focus of the lesson was "character motivation".

Fourth period we reviewed 4.3 (knowing what to do with remainders) and then we went on to look at powers of 10 and using these to divide in 4.4.  If your child has practiced their multiplication facts, using the basic facts and powers of ten (zeros), it was an easy easy lesson.  We then did clinical review and did the "switch" game and went from station to station to practice the skills learned this week.

Fifth period we went to the library for WAGGLE practice in Math.  10 students sat in the back and worked on their homework from the night before.  I guess I am going to have to call parents again about missing or incomplete homework.

Sixth period we had lunch (PIZZA DAY!).   I was asked to help out with lunch duty and I have to tell you, I had a really good time interacting with the fifth graders.   They made me laugh so much! Interestingly,  it was the first time in two weeks that none of my students got in trouble during lunch. Hmmm!

Last period of the day we finished up lingering math questions and then reread and finished Chapter 3 Lesson 1 in Social Studies and did two worksheets about the first explorers to reach New York.

Homework:
Reading:  Legend Reading Comprehension Story
Math: Factors, Multiples, Primes and Composites Review Sheet
