I don't know what the difference is, but I am finally getting "MY" class back. Last week was really really rough. The kids just didn't have any motivation to pay attention, to stop talking, to do anything constructive. It really showed in their Chapter 5 test and Performance Task. Parents - be expecting to see Math Scores drop on Friday's Progress Report.
1st - Checked homework and see who brought back progress reports. Then we ready Chapter 6 in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The book is building quickly in the plot and the students are already seeing changes in character traits with the Herdmans. They are also now able to tell the difference between external dialogue and internal dialogue. ASK THEM!
2nd - Dance
3rd - We checked our homework " The Story of Arachne" which is a legend about how spiders became such masters as weaving webs. Then we started reading one of my very favorite TALL TALES! We started reading Pecos Bill. Our focus is looking at dialogue, character traits, and theme. We also introduced a type of figure of speech called an idiom. These are a set of words that say one thing, but mean something different, like "he had a green thumb" doesn't mean his thumb was green, but that he was good with plants.
4th - We worked on checking homework and then talked about estimating with division. Remember, division is just the inverse (opposite) of multiplication. It is still quite evident that students are NOT practicing their multiplication tables. A great stocking stuffer for the holidays would be some multiplication and division flash cards! PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
5th - We continued to work on 4.1 - estimation with division. We did not go and WAGGLE today!
6th - LUNCH
7th - We took time to go over the Performance Task questions one at a time. We broke them down and the kids noticed that the tasks were not hard at all. They need to STOP, SLOW DOWN, READ CLOSELY, and PERFORM. They are rushing and forgetting.
Homework:
Bring in signed progress reports if you forgot
Reading - Colorful Idioms handout and How the Chipmunk Got its Stripe (Legend reading comp.)
Math - Finish classwork on 4.1
